As trendy and beneficial as one page websites may be ( read our article on the subject here ), there's no denying the strength of tradition. When people think of websites, they still think of navigation bars that take them across pages to anywhere they need to go. For a lot of people, that's what they're expecting when they click on your site - so why not give it to them? Familiarity and comfort is a large part of the sales experience, so making sure that your customers are comfortable with your site is incredibly important.
Great Control over SEO
- When a website has multiple pages, it has multiple opportunities to explain what it does to Google through the use of SEO (
Search Engine Optimization
). Every single page can be set up with its own keywords that help to rank it higher on search engines, and make it easier for people to find your site no matter what they type into the search bar. This is a huge benefit for creating new business opportunities and driving traffic, especially since it's something that one page websites do so badly.
Easy to Measure Performance
- One of the most useful web design tools is site analytics. They let you see how many people are visiting your site, where they're coming from, who they are (depending on the cookies that they allow), and most importantly, what pages they're visiting. With multiple pages you can pinpoint the most popular content on your site, and either push more in that direction, or improve your less popular pages. Knowing what engages your customers is a fantastic tool to have at your disposal.
Adding Pages
- When you want to add content to a one page site, you have to figure out where it'll go, and move the entire site around to accommodate for it. With a multi page site, you simply create a new page and add it to the navigation menu where it fits most. Where growth could have been daunting, it's now very easy to handle and manage.
Landing Pages
- This one is a little bit more complicated. Landing pages are the pages of the site that customers are brought to when they click on specific links. The most common landing page is the home page, since that's likely where Google will direct them, but with social media posts and ads you can drive your customers to other pages with specialized page links, so that they only see the specific content that they're looking for. Targeted landing pages are a great marketing tool that one page sites sadly lack.
Since we've only gone over the benefits of a multi page site, it might be difficult to see the drawbacks (
which is why you should read this post too
).
Before you decide on one page vs multi page, take a few things into consideration.
Who is your market?
- Would they benefit from a traditional navigation method, or are they too busy to stick around.
How much content do you need?
-
Is your content varied enough to need different categories, and is there simply too much to have on one page.
Are you regularly growing?
- How often will you need to create new pages or add things to your website.
